Maldives Travel Guide: Bangladesh’s Closest Tropical Paradise

Book your trip or contact us!

The Maldives needs little introduction — overwater villas, turquoise lagoons, and some of the most photographed beaches in the world. As one of the shorter flights from Bangladesh into a completely different world of coral islands and clear water, it’s a popular choice for honeymoons, anniversaries, and relaxed getaways away from crowds.

Why Visit the Maldives

  • World-Class Beaches & Water — Some of the clearest water and finest white-sand beaches anywhere
  • Overwater Villas — A signature Maldives experience, found at resorts across the islands
  • Snorkeling & Diving — Coral reefs and marine life right off the beach at many resorts
  • A True Getaway — Private island resorts offer a level of seclusion that’s hard to find elsewhere
  • Short Flight from Bangladesh — One of the more accessible tropical island destinations for Bangladeshi travelers

Where to Go & What to See

The Maldives isn’t structured around cities or towns to visit — it’s structured around which island (or islands) you stay on, since most travel happens between the capital Malé and a specific resort or local island. Malé itself is worth a brief stop if you have a layover, with the Grand Friday Mosque and a busy local market and fish market giving a sense of everyday Maldivian life outside the resorts.

For the resort experience, islands in the North and South Malé Atolls are the most accessible, usually a short speedboat ride from the airport, making them convenient if you don’t want to spend hours in transit. Atolls further out, like Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for manta ray and whale shark sightings, especially at Hanifaru Bay) or the Ari Atoll, require a seaplane transfer but are known for richer marine life and quieter surroundings.

If budget is a bigger factor, local islands such as Maafushi offer guesthouse-style accommodation at a fraction of resort prices, with public beaches, bikini beaches set apart per local custom, and day trips to nearby sandbanks and snorkeling spots — a good way to experience the Maldives without a resort-level budget.

Most activities revolve around the water regardless of where you stay: snorkeling directly off the beach or over house reefs, diving trips to see manta rays and reef sharks, sunset fishing trips, and dolphin-watching cruises are offered by nearly every resort and guesthouse.

Best Time to Visit

November to April is the dry season and generally considered the best time to visit, with sunny skies and calm seas ideal for water activities. May to October is the wetter season, with more rain and occasional rough seas, though it tends to be less crowded and sometimes more affordable.

Travel Tips

  • Bangladeshi travelers can typically get a visa on arrival for a limited stay — check current requirements before booking
  • Resort islands can be expensive, so budget-conscious travelers may want to look at local guesthouse islands instead
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen, as it’s often required or recommended to protect the coral
  • Seaplane and speedboat transfers to resort islands can take a significant chunk of travel time, so factor that into your schedule

How Long Should You Plan For?

A single-island resort stay of 4-5 nights is enough to properly enjoy the beach, water activities, and relaxation the Maldives is known for, without feeling rushed by transfers. If your budget allows for combining a resort stay with a local island for a more affordable add-on, plan for 6-7 nights total. Shorter trips of 2-3 nights are possible but leave little room to enjoy the pace the destination is built around.
