Saudi Arabia Travel Guide: Umrah, Hajj, and Beyond

Book your trip or contact us!

For most Bangladeshi travelers, a trip to Saudi Arabia centers around Umrah or Hajj — the spiritual journey to Makkah and Madinah. Alongside the religious significance, Saudi Arabia has also opened up in recent years to broader tourism, with historic sites, deserts, and modern cities now more accessible to visitors than in the past.

Why Visit Saudi Arabia

  • Umrah & Hajj — The core reason most Bangladeshi travelers visit, centered on the Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah
  • Deep Islamic Heritage — Beyond the Two Holy Mosques, the country holds significant historical and religious sites
  • Emerging Tourism Destinations — Sites like AlUla’s ancient rock-carved tombs are opening up a newer side of Saudi tourism
  • Modern Cities — Riyadh and Jeddah offer a mix of contemporary development and traditional character
  • Well-Organized Pilgrimage Infrastructure — Facilities for pilgrims have expanded significantly in recent years

Where to Go & What to See

Makkah is centered entirely around the Masjid al-Haram (the Grand Mosque) and the Kaaba at its center — the focal point of the Umrah rites (Tawaf around the Kaaba and Sa’i between Safa and Marwah). Most pilgrims spend the bulk of their time in Makkah near the mosque, with the surrounding area built up specifically to accommodate the large number of pilgrims performing their rituals.

Madinah, the second holy city, is centered on Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet’s Mosque), which houses the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) tomb. Many pilgrims consider visiting Madinah, along with sites like Quba Mosque (the first mosque built in Islam) and Mount Uhud, an essential and deeply moving part of their journey, typically spending several days here as part of the same trip.

Jeddah, often the arrival point for pilgrims flying in, has its own historical district — Al-Balad, a UNESCO World Heritage old town with distinctive coral-stone buildings — worth a stop if your itinerary allows time before or after Makkah and Madinah.

AlUla, in the country’s northwest, represents Saudi Arabia’s newer push into tourism — home to Hegra, the country’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, with rock-cut tombs carved by the Nabataeans (the same civilization behind Jordan’s Petra). This is generally a separate trip from a religious visit, aimed at travelers interested in Saudi Arabia’s ancient history and dramatic desert landscapes.

For most Bangladeshi travelers, the trip is structured entirely around Makkah and Madinah as an Umrah journey, with historical or leisure sites like AlUla considered only as an additional, separate visit.

Best Time to Visit

Umrah can be performed year-round, though Ramadan is considered especially significant and tends to be the busiest period. Outside of the religious calendar, weather-wise, the cooler months from November to February are more comfortable for travel, as summer temperatures can be extremely high.

Travel Tips

  • A specific Umrah or Hajj visa is required, and travel is typically arranged through a licensed agency given the religious and logistical requirements involved
  • Ihram and other ritual requirements should be understood in advance — most organized packages include guidance on this
  • Given the significance and volume of pilgrims, especially during Ramadan and Hajj season, booking well ahead of time is strongly recommended
  • Modest dress is required throughout, particularly around the Holy Mosques

How Long Should You Plan For?

A standard Umrah package typically runs 10-14 days, split between Makkah and Madinah, allowing enough time to perform the rites without rushing and to visit both holy cities properly. Shorter 7-day packages are available for travelers with limited time, though they leave less room to revisit the mosques multiple times during the stay.
